Ecosystems

Four plant communities

The reserve's altitudinal range (700–2,500 m a.s.l.) creates a vertical sequence of communities, from the valley to the low Andean scrub.

Piedmont

Mediterranean sclerophyllous forest

Dominated by quillay (Quillaja saponaria), litre (Lithraea caustica) and frangel (Kageneckia angustifolia). Signature community of central Chile's piedmont.

Wet ravines

Relict hygrophilous forest

One of the most valuable communities in the reserve, with lingue, peumo, canelo and luma. Highly restricted distribution and significant biogeographical value.

Valley

Mediterranean thorny forest

Community dominated by espino (Acacia caven), characteristic of the lower valley floors.
