Our work
The Fundación Santuario de la Naturaleza El Ajial is a non-profit organization established on 14 November 2016, devoted exclusively to the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of the territory that today forms El Ajial National Reserve. Its legal name keeps the designation under which the area was first protected in 2016.
Its work centres on the effective protection of the area's conservation targets: the hydrological processes of the El Ajial stream, the populations of threatened and endemic fauna and flora, the relict hygrophilous forest and the soil with its organic cover. To these are added the safeguarding of archaeological heritage and, to the extent compatible with the above, research, environmental education and ecological restoration.
The Foundation is the administrator of the area under article 102 of Law No. 21,600 and carries out the Management Plan under the supervision of the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service. Each year it evaluates the Plan's indicators and keeps a management report available to the Service.
Conservation work is not about watching trees grow or birds fly overhead; quite the opposite, it demands planning, knowledge and, above all, being active in carrying out strategic actions with limited resources. Who works at El Ajial
The permanent team is five people, who carry out the core activities of the Management Plan with the Reserve's own means: surveillance, upkeep of what has been built, plant production, monitoring of the conservation targets and coordination with institutions.
